Both are great quality hides that we hand select to ensure you are getting the best possible hide. Nguni hides are sourced here in South Africa. Brazilian hides are generally from the Texas Longhorn breed. Both the Nguni and the Texas Longhorn originate from cattle in India. Both are farmed for their meat, making the hide a by-product.

Our cowhides are 100% real cowhide with a natural suede backing. We do not sell faux cowhides.

Cowhides are naturally one of a kind so we only have one of each. However, we would be happy to try and find you a cowhide that best matches the one you like.

The hides are photographed on a tiled floor that has measurements in meters on the sides.

Texas long horn and Nguni rugs are naturally resistant to stain and discoloration. Much like our own hair.

Cleaning a cowhide rug requires a delicate approach to ensure its longevity and preserve its natural beauty. Start by taking the rug outside and gently shaking it to remove loose dirt and debris. Next, use a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to carefully remove any remaining dirt or dust particles. Be sure to brush or vacuum in the direction of the hair to avoid damaging the rug.

For small stains or spills, immediately blot the affected area with a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can spread the stain or push it deeper into the rug. If necessary, lightly spray our HideSkin cleaner and gently blot the stained area. Once the stain is removed, rinse the area with a clean, damp cloth and pat dry with a towel. Avoid using harsh chemicals, excessive water, or submerging the rug in water, as these can damage the hide.

Finally, allow the rug to air dry in the shade completely before placing it back in its designated space. Regularly brushing the cowhide rug and keeping it away from direct sunlight or excessive heat sources will help maintain its appearance and extend its lifespan.

Give the hide a week or two after unpacking it and the creases should sort themselves out. You'll need patience and a gentle approach to prevent any damage. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you:

Lay the rug flat: Find a clean, dry area where you can lay the cowhide rug down flat. This could be a clean floor or a large table.

Apply gentle heat: Gently warm the creased area of the rug using a hairdryer or a handheld steamer. Keep the heat setting on low or medium to avoid overheating the hide.

Massage and stretch: Once the creased area becomes warm and pliable, massage it gently with your hands. Use circular motions and light pressure to encourage the fibres to relax. If the crease is stubborn, you can try pulling and stretching the surrounding area of the rug to redistribute the tension.

Use a heavy object: If the crease persists, you can place a heavy object, such as a stack of books or weighted objects, on the affected area of the rug. Leave it there for a few hours or overnight to help the hide flatten out naturally.

Reverse roll technique: Another method you can try is the reverse roll technique. Start by flipping the rug over, so the creased area is facing down. Then, tightly roll the rug in the opposite direction of the crease. Secure the rolled rug with straps or belts and let it sit for several hours or overnight. Unroll the rug, and the crease should be less noticeable. Remember to be gentle throughout the process and avoid excessive force or harsh chemicals. Cowhide rugs are natural products, and while they can be resilient, they still require delicate care to maintain their quality and appearance.
